Depth of Blue is an exploration of emotional depth through colour psychology by understanding the meaning behind the various shades and tones of blue. Blue is often associated with the feelings of serenity and calmness. Seen amongst nature in a clear sky or upon calm water it creates a sense of peace from life when we need to escape from it. Through this realistic portrait painting, I aimed to utilize the aspects of colour psychology in depicting emotional depth and feelings. This realistic portrait is of my friend Ellena and I wanted to capture the embodiment of the qualities that resemble the feelings of the colour blue. Softer values of blue are often described as tranquility, calmness, peace, and wisdom—the monochromatic blue builds upon the calm and effortless expression that is present. Emotion cognition within the piece invites viewers to take time to read into the meaning and understand the emotions present through the expression. The colours build upon the visual depth but also contribute to the emotions that construct the work's visual reading. Within the background of the painting, the reflection of the front lighting casts upon glass frames. This impact of natural sunlight creates a soft and fluid transparent background amongst the detailed figure in the foreground. It is a smooth balance between the detailed textures in the sweater and the waviness of the curly hair that compliments the essence of calmness and peace. Depth of Blue is not just a realistic representation of someone known to me personally but explores the underlying meaning within colour incorporation. Analyzing the fundamental elements of colour psychology emphasizes those universal feelings that we experience through our everyday interactions and surroundings. Understanding the impacts that colour has on the visual reading of a work is key in building upon the narrative and emotional message that is the work.
