Distorted Reality

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut bibendum tortor sit amet ligula rutrum, at porta tortor convallis ...

Distorted Reality explores the evolving social issue of how social media filters and digital technology is reshaping how we perceive ourselves, particularly in our physical appearances. The development of social media apps such as Snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram is equipped with filters to alter one's natural beauty into a so-called “better” version of oneself. However beneath the glossy surface of technology lies a distracting truth; these filters can be ultimately unsettling or even fighting, as they disrupt our perception of what is reality versus our own true identity. The terrifying portrait of myself was intended to capture the distortion that is associated with using digital face filters. We use filters to change a person's physical appearance which visually usually looks off-putting or unnatural. Looking further at an enhanced photograph of yourself can feel off as it does not capture your true identity, on how you look on the outside. Though this painting exaggerates how much filters can change one's appearance, it's the build-up of continuous usage of digital technology that it can have on someone mentally. Over time, the constant need for self-improvement based on how one perceives the true essence of what perfection is can cause anxiety, disconnect, or even fear.

Love the new artwork in my office and living room. It lifts us up everyday, acts as a conversation piece in Zoom calls, and we love the most being able to support artists in our communities as well.
